The site you are reading: bilingual, light and dark themes, fast, cookie-free and with self-hosted fonts.
The goal
A personal website that is also an example of the work: fast, accessible, readable on a phone, with no cookies and no third-party services.
The choices
- Astro: pages are generated ahead of time and served by Cloudflare Pages. Every change to the code goes live on its own, and every working branch gets its own preview address.
- JavaScript only where it helps: the theme switch, the small animations on the home page and the contact form. Everything else is HTML and CSS, and the site stays readable with JavaScript turned off; the project filters and the phone menu work without it.
- Two languages with translated URLs and a typed dictionary: if a translation is missing, the build stops.
- Light and dark themes from a single set of colours; the choice is applied before the page is drawn, so there’s no flash.
- Self-hosted fonts trimmed to the characters and weights actually used: about 50 KB in total, with no requests to outside services.
- Prototype first: first four visual directions compared on a canvas, then a full redesign made with Claude Design, always before writing the code.
